Planting cucumbers
I’ve been interested in making Oiji Muchim for a while now and thought it would be cool to grow the cucumbers.
Cindy had five seed packets but I wanted to choose only two so as not to overdo it. (Cindy is an avid gardener. I am not.) I chose the “Shintokiwa” which Cindy bought just recently after seeing that “Made in House” -- a restaurant we like -- used it for their daily pickle. And I chose the “Congelkoy” Persian cucumber because I thought it might be the easiest of the “similar to Korean pickles” to grow.

We planted the seeds in soil blocks, watered the trays and put them on a heat pad with lights. The packet says that the Shintokiwa will germinate in 5-10 days and the persians in 4-9. Cindy thinks they’ll germinate faster than that in the soil blocks.

day 3 (May 15)
I checked on my seedlings. A few of the Shintokiwa have sprouted. Growing in soil blocks speed things up substantially!

day 4 (May 16)

Shintokiwa above. Congelkoy have now popped their heads up as well. Moved off the heating pads; just under lights now.
